Ever use emoticons that employ crazy foreign characters, like ಠ_ಠ, or just want to punctuate your parenthetical thoughts with a proper em dash rather than a puny hyphen? I know I do, and I know I can’t bother to learn the alt codes for all those glyphs or open up OpenOffice just to pluck them out from Insert Symbol. So I created Unicorn.

Unicorn is a small application designed to help you input Unicode symbols to your documents. The main window shows the contents of one Unicode block at a time. Clicking on a button will either add the displayed character to the editor in the bottom right corner of the main window, append it to the clipboard or send it directly to the last active window, depending on the option you’ve chosen in the settings dialog. Right clicking a button will display a host of information on the given character; clicking on any of them will print the stated data in stead of the actual symbol. You can also control-click an option to pick it as the “default”: i.e. that which will be printed when you click the button. Clicking the dropdown button in the lower left corner will display the list of Unicode blocks you’ve selected in the settings dialog; click them to change the block displayed on the main window, or the “Favorites” item to display the characters you’ve picked as your favorites. Note that Unicorn is system tray -based; clicking the X button will only hide the main window. Click quit or choose Exit from the system tray icon right click menu to close.

Other options that can be edited in the settings dialog feature whether to start Unicorn at Windows start-up, start it minimized, whether the main window is always on top when visible and the typeface used in the main window. Since most fonts don’t contain all unicode characters, you should experiment with what you have if all you see are blocks or question marks. See Wikipedia’s List of Unicode fonts for your best bets. I recommend Paul Hardy and Roman Czyborra’s GNU Unifont.
